San Marcos Prevention Coalition - San Marcos Prevention Coalition works to reduce and prevent youth substance abuse within the City of San Marcos, CA. The City of San Marcos has a population of approximately 90,000:

San Marcos is home to 12 elementary schools, an English-learner Academy, three middle schools, four high schools, Palomar Community College and California State University San Marcos (CSUSM). There are approximately 20,000 students in the San Marcos Unified School District with half of those students in grades 7th through 12th.
The San Marcos Prevention Coalition's goals are:
1. Establish and strengthen collaboration among communities, public and private non profit agencies,and federal, state, local, and tribal governments to support the efforts of community coalitions working to prevent and reduce substance use among youth.
Strategies Interventions to accomplish the goal include:
a. Coordinate monthly coalition meetings;
b Increase coalition members' prevention knowledge and engagement;
c Collect substance abuse data;
d. Create and deliver media advisories, utilize social media and website;
e. Host town halls and parent forums; and
f. Organize youth led prevention projects.
2. Reduce substances use among youth and, over time, reduce substance abuse among adults by addressing the factors in a community that increase the risk of substance abuse and promoting the factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse.
Strategies Interventions to accomplish the goal include:
a. Enforce the Social Host ordinance;
b Enforce the Responsible Beverage Sales and Service ordinance;
c. Enforce the city's laws against illegal pot shops and manufacturing growing;
d. Enforce laws against the selling of drug paraphernalia in a retail setting;
e. Advocate for smokefree and vapefree public places;
f. Advocate for smokefree and vapefree multi-family housing policies;
g. Enforce vendor policies against the selling and marketing of drug paraphernalia and 'druggie wea' at public events and street fairs; and
h. Continue to maintain middle and high school level youth groups and ensure their effective engagement in the implementation of the 12 month action plan.
The San Marcos Prevention Coalition will serve 25,000 annually and 125,000 throughout the next 5 years in San Marcos through their environmental prevention strategies outlined in their 12 month action plan.
