Lancaster County, SC SPF-PFS - PROJECT ABSTRACT SUMMARY Summary: The project involves a partnership between the Coalition for Healthy Youth, University of South Carolina-Lancaster, and Lancaster Sheriff’s Office to conduct a range of environmental prevention strategies to reduce underage drinking and prescription drug misuse. Project Name: Lancaster County Partnership for Success Project Population to be Served: The project targets the entire rural county of Lancaster, South Carolina but with special attention to three high need subpopulations: 1) high school age youth residing in one of the highest poverty neighborhoods in the state, an area known as “The Hill”; 2) affluent youth from neighborhoods in the northern panhandle of the county, Indian Land; and 3) First Year College Students attending the local campus at the University of South Carolina-Lancaster. Goals and Objectives: Three goals and 17 objectives have been established for the project: • Increase Coalition infrastructure and capacity to successfully address youth substance abuse in the community. • Reduce the Incidence and Prevalence of Underage Drinking And Alcohol Related Problems In Three Sub-populations: Indian Land, The Hill and First Year College Students. • Reduce the Incidence and Prevalence of Prescription Drug Misuse Among Youth, Especially Opioid Class Painkillers. Strategies/ Interventions: A range of environmental prevention strategies are proposed based on Community Trials Intervention to Reduce High Risk Drinking, law enforcement retail compliance checks, party patrols, sobriety checkpoints, and community awareness campaign aligned to promote each activity. In addition, the Brief Alcohol Screening Intervention for College Students is also planned. An estimated 1,000 youth will be served each year.
