Project Name – FACE STOP (Sober Truth on Preventing Underage Drinking
Description of the population to be served - The population of focus are youth between the ages of 12 to 20 and their parents living in ZIP code area 78046 in Webb County of Laredo, Texas. The demographics of this age group consists of 93% Hispanic/Latino, 2% White, <1% Black, <1% Asian, <1%, American Indian, <1% Native Hawaiian, <1% multi-cultural. Thirty-nine percent of the population of focus are under the age of 17. Only 60% speaks English and only 10% of the Laredo population speaks English. Only 35% of adults that are age 18 to 20 have a high school diploma.
Number of people to be served annually and during the lifetime of the project, - FACE will prevent underage use of alcohol and reduce the related juvenile crime among 8250 youth annually and 33.000 over a 4-year period that live, work, play, and worship in the 78046 zip code of Laredo, Texas. Annually, there will be 300 high school youth that receive Botvin evidenced-based Life Skills training; 6000 middle and high school and college age young adults exposed to public awareness messages; 250 parents receive parenting training, and 500 parents engaged in positive family activities.
Summary of the services to be provided The goal of this project is to prevent/reduce alcohol use among youth and young adults ages 12-20 by implementing strategies interventions following the Strategic Prevention Framework that will build, enhance the prevention infrastructure to 1) address community norms, 2) limit access/availability, 3) expand underage drinking enforcement, and 4) reduce related community harm. The impact of these strategies intervention measured by an annual approved School survey for middle, high school and college students will result in 10% decrease in Past 30-day use of alcohol with a collective impact of 40% over 4-years; 20% increase in Perception of risk/harm of alcohol with a collective impact of 80% over 4-years and; 20% increase in Perception of parental disapproval of alcohol/underage drinking with a collective impact of 80% over 4-years; and 20% increase in Perception of peer disapproval of alcohol with a collective impact of 80% over 4-years. This project will reduce alcohol/drug-related juvenile crime among youth 12-20 by 10% annually and 40% over 4-years measured by juvenile data from the Police Dept., Webb County Sheriff, and U.S. Border Patrol.
Description of coordination planned with appropriate public agencies - FACE will coordinate with the Laredo Health and Police Departments, Webb County Sheriff’s Dept., U.S. Border Patrol, the United Independent School District, and the Texas Dept. of Health and Human Services to achieve programmatic and policy change objectives. FACE will coordinate with Texas A&M University and the Prevention Technology Transfer Center to secure training and technical assistance to develop and enhance our prevention infrastructure.
