The Fresno American Indian Health Project (FAIHP) Native Empowerment and Wellness (NEW) represents programming that encompasses the meeting of needs for American Indian and Native (AI/AN) youth ages 9 to 20 in Fresno County, California. The FAIHP Indian Health Project (FAIHP), an American Indian non-profit organization that is recognized by the Indian Health Services (HIS) as an Urban Indian Health Program under Title V of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act, PL 94-437 will use a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) model work on cultural substance abuse prevention services, substance abuse treatment services, and behavioral health services to address the impacts that substance abuse has made/is making on youth families in the community to be served. This project is expected to serve at least 80 AI/AN youth during the first year of the project as necessary staffing is placed and a solid foundation is set. The goal is to increase the service enrollment by at least 10% each year as the project is brought to scale. Outreach, social media, cultural, and prevention activities will reach at least 350 additional individuals each year to address the mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical effects of alcohol and marijuana use, as well as to promote the FAIHP services that are provided as a part of the NEW_ project. The project with achieve the following goals: 1. Increase services focused on substance use prevention activities for youth ages 9-20 by implementing culturally-appropriate programming – This project with implement evidence-based practice-based approaches with American Indian/Alaska Native youth in culturally appropriate ways using the Gathering of Native Americans and Native Helping Our People Endure curriculum as well as assess community needs on an annual basis 2. Decrease risk factors that increase vulnerability to substance abuse for youth within the Fresno community through promotion of positive parental guidance by incorporating case management services with youth service and by providing services that will strengthen the family units, 3. Increase American Indian/Alaska Native awareness of overall (mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional) effects of the use of alcohol and marijuana use. This will be met by measuring community awareness of the effects of alcohol and marijuana and by proving on-going access to alcohol and drug prevention education.
