Project to reduce underage drinking and substance abuse through collaboration for community level change in Klickitat County, WA. - The project to reduce underage drinking and substance abuse through collaboration for community level change in Klickitat County, Washington will be entering Year 3 of the Drug Free Communities federal grant program on September 30, 2020. Operating through Washington Gorge Action Programs, the Our Klickitat Prevention Coalition will continue to promote prevention activities and resources aimed at empowering youth and adults. The coalition will gather data from the Washington State Healthy Youth Survey which will capture information in fall of 2020 from 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th graders to see how current rates of substance use, perception of risk and perception of disapproval from parents and peers compare to data from 2018. The group will evaluate the work done to date to decide and make modifications as necessary. Students will be growing the youth council and share opportunities available to travel to events such as the Washington State Prevention Summit and the Spring Youth Forum. They will have a chance to visit the state capitol and learn more about how the process to create new laws work so that they will have tools to create lasting change through legislation. The two main substances of focus are alcohol and marijuana. A large concern in the rural communities is impaired driving, which puts the driver, passengers and other motorists at risk. Youth are designing a Text X campaign and the group will be working to partner with law enforcement to be visible at the Klickitat County Fair, to showcase prevention efforts alongside the WSP Mobile Impaired Driving Unit with its Target Zero Campaign. Building on the positive energy, the coalition will further develop OurKlickitat.org and social media platforms, adding SnapChat to appeal to more youth. Community collaboration will continue with plans in place to hold National Night Out and Key Leader Events which bring our Sector Representatives together with area youth to build strong relationships and trust. Youth participation is essential in all activities and will drive the coalition.
