The Be Healthy Beverly (BHB) coalition serves Beverly, Massachusetts, an urban city of 40,967 residents. According to the American Community Survey (2010-2016),94.5% of Beverly's population is White. 1.1% of residents identify as African American, 2.0% are Asian, and 0.8% are some other race. 1.6% of the city's population claim two or more races. Hispanics make up 4.1% of the city's population. BHB’s mission is to engage the community in working together to live healthier lifestyles, reduce substance use, improve mental health, expand access to nutritious food, increase physical activity, and promote a healthy environment by implementing evidence-based programs, creating awareness, providing education, applying comprehensive strategies, and supporting health and wellness. Youth substance use prevention is the coalition's current focus. The goal of the coalition is to establish and strengthen community collaboration in support of local efforts to prevent youth substance use. BHB will achieve its goal by implementing the following strategies: (1) carrying out a community needs assessment;(2) building community capacity and engaging coalition members in the coordination, planning, and evaluation of a comprehensive community plan to achieve a quantifiable reduction in youth substance use; (3) identifying and implementing evidence-based strategies designed to change community conditions and social norms around underage drinking and youth tobacco use; and (4)reducing youth access to alcohol and tobacco.
