Jones County CARA project - The Jones County Safe and Healthy Youth Coalition (Coalition) with legal grantee, Area Substance Abuse Council (ASAC), will implement the Jones County CARA project to reduce youth methamphetamine use and prescription medication misuse. The project will serve 2,000 youth 12-18 years of age in Jones County, Iowa. The Coalition utilizes the Strategic Prevention Framework as its decision-making process to determine the strategies included in the Action Plan. The Coalition has a strong history of key stakeholder involvement from many active, skilled, and influential representatives within sectors, particularly in the youth-serving organizations, law enforcement, and religious sectors.
In the 10-year history of the Coalition, it has implemented proven strategies and interventions to reduce unhealthy behavior in Jones County youth. The Coalition has targeted policies and practices, created effective workgroups, engaged many sectors in its work, and created and conducted surveys revealing important data.
The project will serve 2,000 youth 12-18 years of age in the first year and 2,000 youth in the same age range in each subsequent year.
The Jones County CARA project has two goals, each with corresponding objectives to result in measurable outcomes.
Goal 1: Reduce Youth Methamphetamine Use. Objective 1: Decrease the ease of accessibility of methamphetamines reported by Jones County 11th grade youth in the 2016 IYS (15%) by 2 percentage points by June 14, 2019 measured by the 11th grade Iowa Youth Survey. Population addressed: Youth 12-18. Objective 2: Decrease the 2016 IYS percentage of 11th grade youth who reported no or slight risk of harming themselves if they used methamphetamines (16%) by 2 percentage points by June 14, 2019, measured by 11th grader Iowa Youth surveys. Population addressed: Youth 12-18.
Goal 2: Reduce Youth Prescription Medication Misuse. Objective 1: Decrease the ease of accessibility of prescription medications not prescribed to them reported by 11th grade youth in the 2016 IYS (39%) by 2 percentage points by June 14, 2019, by 11th grade students Iowa Youth Survey. Population addressed: Youth 12 to 18. Objective 2: Decrease the 2016 IYS percentage of 11th grade youth who reported no or slight risk of harming themselves if using prescription medications prescribed for someone else (17%) by 2 percentage points by June 14, 2019, by 11th grade students Iowa Youth Survey. Population addressed: Youth 12-18.
