Project Name: PreventionFIRST! Opioid Prevention
Summary: PreventionFRIST! (PF!), formerly the Coalition for a Drug-Free Greater Cincinnati, will focus on preventing and reducing the use and misuse of prescription medications and opioids among youth in Hamilton County, Ohio. PF! will utilize the Strategic Prevention Framework planning process and implement evidence-based programs and practices in a culturally appropriate manner to bring about community level change.
Population Served: 12-18 year olds in communities throughout Hamilton county, esp. in identified neighborhoods with a 30-day prescription drug use rate and opioid use rate higher than county average.
Project Goal 1: To prevent and reduce prescription drug and opioid use/misuse among youth, age 12-18 in Hamilton County, Ohio
Project Goal 2: To strengthen collaboration among communities, the federal government, state, local and tribal government to reduce the use of opioids or methamphetamines and the abuse of prescription medication among youth ages 12-18 in Hamilton County, Ohio.
Measurable Objective 1: By June 2021, decrease 12-18 year old past 30-day use of prescription drugs by 0.5% from 3.1% to 2.6% as measured by the 2020 Student Drug Use Survey.
Measurable Objectives 2: By June 2021, increase the capacity of our community to be engaged in prevention by 50% through educational opportunities as measured by # of youth attendees, # of sector representatives, # of presentations and post-event evaluations.
The Strategies will focus on information dissemination, prevention education, and environmental change. The Interventions are designed to:
a). Change the community norm that youth prescription/opioid consumption is acceptable,
b). Decrease easy access and availability of prescription drugs and opioids for youth,
c). Increase media messaging that promotes monitoring, securing, and safe disposal of prescription drugs and opioids, and
d). Improve policy related to effective prevention education for youth in schools.
PreventionFIRST! will implement data analysis, community education, prescriber education, safe storage and prescription drug disposal, media messaging, capacity-building training, youth led prevention, and policy activities.
# of people to be served annually & lifetime of project: As of the 2010 Census, 802,374 reside in Hamilton county and approximately 14% of the total population is within the target age group of 12-18, or approximately 109,535 individuals.
