The purpose of this project is to prevent and reduce the abuse of opioids or methamphetamines and the abuse of prescription medications among youth ages 12-18 in the Dallas County community. - The Children’s Policy Council of Dallas County, Alabama Inc.(DCCPC) and its Drug Free Communities Coalition through the CARA Local Drug Crises Grant (CARA) will implement a program to prevent and reduce the abuse of opioids, methamphetamines and prescription medications among youth ages 12 - 18 in Selma and Dallas County, Alabama. Selma and Dallas County have double digit unemployment rates, pervasive poverty, high crime rates and population loss. As a result, Selma and Dallas County have seen an increase in school grade failure, school dropout rates and increased drug abuse of opioid, methamphetamines and prescription medications - the prescribing rate in Dallas County is almost double the National average. With the support from the CARA grant, the DFC coalition will build on its established partnerships and strengthen community collaboration through the development of a community wide Action Plan that includes: Goal One: Increase Community Collaboration. DCCPC will utilize the following strategies: • Engage members to review data collected and develop strategies to address youth opioid and prescription medication abuse • Engage members in recruiting new members of the community to impact the problem • Provide training to members to implement strategies that impact community-level change by utilizing the Strategic Prevention Framework Goal Two: Reduce Youth Substance Use. DCCPC will focus on decreasing prescription drug abuse and will utilize the following strategies: • Provide information through Public Awareness Campaigns and Social Norms Campaigns • Enhance skills of healthcare professionals and schools to educate parents on the dangers of specific medications and develop their skills to secure, monitor and properly dispose of medications • Provide support for those in-need of treatment by linking them to treatment providers and support groups • Enhance barriers to prescription medication availability through partnering with law enforcement to participate in a medication take-back day • Change physical design by promoting use of medication lock boxes in the home • Change/modify policy by educating state lawmakers on strong Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs This program will contribute to the reduction in opioid, methamphetamines and prescription medication abuse among youth ages 12-18 in Dallas County.
