CARA Enhancement Grant - The Prevention Council of Roanoke County (also known as the Council) proposes to use CARA funding to enhance opioid and prescription drug prevention education for youth ages 6th to 12th grade in Roanoke County Public Schools (RCPS). Our project goals are to: 1) increase youth's perception of harm related to opioid and prescription drug use; and 2) lower youth's reported lifetime opioid and prescription drug use. Project strategies include:
1) Planning and implementing a sustainable, curriculum-based prevention education program at RCPS that will reach every middle and high school student.
2) Working with youth to create Peer Panel videos relaying their experiences with the opioid epidemic, which will be shared with the community and their peers via urgentlove.org and Heroin Task Force meetings.
3) Working with youth to design and distribute print materials and PSAs aimed at local healthcare professionals regarding prescription drug risks and safe disposal protocol.
4) Analyzing the project's impact on youth's behaviors and attitudes toward opioids and prescription drugs via Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) implementation.
Measurable objectives for this project include:
Objective 1: By June 14, 2021, there will be a 2.0% increase (93.0% to 95.0%) in RCPS high school students and a 1.0% increase (95.8% to 96.8%) in RCPS middle school students who see great/moderate risk in abusing prescription drugs, as demonstrated by comparing 2016 and 2020 YRBS results.
Objective 2: By June 14, 2021, there will be a 2.0% increase (96.3% to 98.3%) in RCPS high school students and a 0.5% increase (98.5% to 99.0%) in RCPS middle school students who believe their parents would feel it wrong for them to abuse prescription drugs, as demonstrated by comparing 2016 and 2020 YRBS results.
Objective 3: By June 14, 2021, there will be a 2.0% increase (84.7% to 86.7%) in RCPS high school students and a 2.0% increase (93.0% to 95.0%) in RCPS middle school students who believe their peers would disapprove of them abusing prescription drugs, as demonstrated by comparing 2016 and 2020 YRBS results.
Objective 4: By June 14, 2021, there will be a 1.0% decrease (5.0% to 4.0%) in RCPS high school students and a 0.5% decrease (3.2% to 2.7%) in RCPS middle school students who report lifetime heroin use, as demonstrated by comparing 2016 and 2020 YRBS results.
Objective 5: By June 14, 2021, there will be a 2.0% decrease (10.5% to 8.5%) in RCPS high school students and a 0.5% decrease (3.6% to 3.1%) in RCPS middle school students who report using prescription drugs in the past 30 days, as demonstrated by comparing 2016 and 2020 YRBS results.
We'll serve at least 5,000 students per year and at least 6,428 students over the project's lifetime.
