Tanner Community Development Corporation (TCDC) facilitates the Help Enrich African American Lives (HEAAL) Coalition. The HEAAL Coalition will address the issue of substance misuse within the African American community among youth ages 12–17 years in specific service areas of Phoenix, AZ. The selected objectives, strategies and action items were strategically chosen based on prevention science, illustrated community need and our successful experience in implementing effective youth substance use prevention efforts in our community over the past five years. Dedicated community and organizational volunteers collaborate to implement community based strategies. We believe these strategies and activities will give us the highest likelihood of addressing the most critical risk and protective factors operating among our African American community and are best suited for reducing the unique known disparities associated with substance use among our youth. Collectively, we believe that they give us the highest return-on-investment for our long-term goals of reducing youth alcohol, nicotine vaping, marijuana and opioid use and the associated inequities in public health and public safety outcomes measures associated with youth substance use in our community.
