The Torrington Awareness and Prevention Partnership (TAPP) is a youth substance use prevention coalition that serves the community of Torrington Connecticut. Established in December of 2013 and federally funded since October 2017, TAPP has worked within the Torrington community to gather collaborative partners, assess community needs, and craft effective interventions to reduce risk factors and increase the protective factors that influence youth substance use and addiction. TAPP’s mission is to prevent and reduce youth substance use, increase awareness of risk factors, reduce the impact of trauma, and build capacity for change within the community. In this application, TAPP seeks to continue its partnership with the McCall Center for Behavioral Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Office of National Drug Control Policy by extending its Drug Free Communities grant funding for an additional five years.
With a focus on addressing youth use of alcohol, nicotine, and cannabis, TAPP will continue its work within the Torrington community by assessing local issues, building local capacity to address identified concerns, planning, and developing a locally appropriate intervention, implementing best practice approaches, and evaluating the impact to make improvements. TAPP works with its community partners to foster collaborative relationships and ensure the implementation of the most effective and sustainable interventions. Understanding the root causes for youth substance use identified within the Torrington community has driven a comprehensive approach to addressing the impacts of these substances on youth. By leveraging our community partners and twelve sector representatives TAPP will:
1. Provide information about youth substance use;
2. Enhance skills to improve decision making capabilities;
3. Provide support to increase opportunities that reduce risk factors and enhance protective factors;
4. Enhance access and reduce barriers to services that can help youth avoid substances;
5. Change the consequences of youth substance use to incentivize positive practices and disincentivize negative practices;
6. Change the physical design of the community to reduce the risk of youth substance use;
7. Educate and inform the community about modifying or changing policies that directly affect youth substance rates within Torrington.
TAPP is also committed to identifying and addressing the mental health concerns that drive and lead to youth substance use behaviors within the community. Through our Trauma Informed Communities Subcommittee, and our partnerships across Torrington, TAPP is committed to improving the overall wellness in our community. We believe that by focusing on increasing the coalition’s capacity to address youth substance use and creating collaborative partnerships to address the impacts of trauma and mental illness, TAPP has become an integral driver for wellness within the Torrington community.
