Project Abstract Summary
The Alliance for Healthy Communities Coalition (AHC) is applying for a FY2022 Drug-Free Communities Support Program-Competing Continuation grant in the amount of $125,000. The mission statement of AHC is to engage the community to reduce youth substance misuse and risks for suicide by raising awareness and changing community norms. The Coalition serves the community defined by the footprint of the Parkway C-2 School District, located in west-central St. Louis County, Missouri, a community of 138,869 people. The coalition's goals are to increase collaboration among community stakeholders and organizations to address youth substance use and reduce substance use among youth, as evidenced by last 30-day use trends. Program objectives for this application include:
Objective 1.1: By the end of the grant period (9/29/27), increase AHC collaborations with minorities, faith-based leaders, local government leaders, youth, and parents by forming at least fifteen new community partnerships as indicated by the project and recruitment records and AHC meeting minutes.
Objective 1.2: By 9/29/27, increase the number of opportunities for community partner interaction with coalition resources by creating four social media campaigns, as indicated by project records, consultation, and training records and social media data reflecting the level of community participation, e.g., "Google Analytics," "likes," "visits," and "followers."
Objective 2.1: By 9/29/27, decrease reported availability of alcohol among Parkway 6th-12th graders by 6% (from 55% in 2018) (Parkway Missouri Student Survey).
Objective 2.2: By 9/29/27, decrease reported availability of prescription medications among Parkway 6th-12th graders by 4% (from 25% in 2018) (Parkway Missouri Student Survey).
Objective 2.3: By 9/29/27, increase perception of harm for underage drinking among Parkway 6th-12th graders by 3% (from 31% in 2018) (Parkway Missouri Student Survey).
The coalition will meet these objectives by implementing a variety of strategies related to increasing awareness of the dangers of preventing access to alcohol and prescription medications. Specifically, AHC will 1) conduct several media campaigns to raise awareness of the coalition and the dangers of underage drinking and prescription medication misuse (including youth-involved development), 2) provide training/education on ID checking/verification for alcohol delivery drivers, 3) promote medication drop box locations and host medication take back events, including expanding to independent living facility locations, 4) develop and promote social host ordinances for municipalities, 5) work with law enforcement to conduct alcohol retailer compliance checks and seasonal saturation patrols around high-risk youth events, 6) promote in-home storage of medication and provide at-home disposal methods.
