The Newberry County Coalition on Underage Drinking is a substance abuse prevention coalition serving all of Newberry County, South Carolina with a targeted focus on the youth population. The goals of the coalition are to 1) establish and strengthen community collaboration in support of preventing youth substance use and 2) to reduce substance abuse among youth. The coalition will achieve its goals with the following strategies: 1) increasing community capacity among the coalition, community leaders, agencies and youth 2) Working with local law enforcement agencies to enforce existing laws impacting youth alcohol and marijuana use 3) plan and implement educational campaigns and 4) provide trainings and presentations to the community surrounding substance abuse trends and concerns. The coalition efforts will expand across all of Newberry County, which has a population of approximately 38,500. Racial demographics show 65.9% Caucasian; 30.8% African-American; 7.6% Latino, and 1.6% 2 or more races. 21.8% of the population is under age 18, resulting in approximately 8,400 youth that the coalition will be targeting annually. Measurable objectives of the coalition will be to reduce the past-30 day use of alcohol and marijuana use of 11th graders by 4% and 3% respectively, as measured by the 2020 CTC (Communities that Care) survey data. The coalition will also strengthen coalition capacity by adding 3 active members by end of year one. Effectiveness of the coalition's action plan will continually be monitored and evaluated by the coalition and evaluator to ensure objectives are being met and progress towards sustainability is being achieved.
