A Sobering Choice (ASC) is focused on addressing the issue of alcohol and drug use among youth ages 12-17 in Shasta County, California. ASC will increase the capacity of the coalition to make community level change to reduce substance abuse by lessening the availability of and access to alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drugs among youth. ASC will increase educational and informational opportunities, and work with leaders and policy makers to ensure enforcement of local ordinances.
Goal 1 is to increase community collaboration - By September 29, 2019, increase coalition leadership by 3 new members focusing the Native American community, media and business sectors, as measured by new member applications and training log and sign-in sheets.
Goal 2 is to reduce youth substance use -- By September 29, 2019, reduce by 2 percent the number of times youth ages 12-17 report using prescription drugs as measured by the California Healthy Kids Survey; By June 15, 2019, increase by 3% the perception of harm of marijuana use by youth ages 12-17; and By September 29, 2019, increase by 5% the number of youth ages 15-17, who are less likely to incur a DUI or get into a car with someone who is under the influence.
Strategies will include revising and updating the strategic plan, strengthen the membership recruitment and training, conduct town hall meetings, review and evaluate countywide assessments, and disseminate annual coalition survey and report, provide education and training on the mew California marijuana legalization laws and health impact, utilized social media to get the message out about prescription drug use and marijuana use, and work with leaders and policy makers to enforce local ordinances, work with law enforcement to enhance the consequences of driving under the influence.
