10. Brief Description of the Target Population: For this project, the population of focus is any Native American / American Indian (NA/AI) residing in Oklahoma. According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2020), there are 332,791 people who identify as Native American only. There are approximately 535,675 people who identify as Native American in combination with another ethnicity. Precise gender identity, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic estimates for our catchment area are not available, but a recent report by the Bureau of Indian Affairs reports that 49% of Oklahoma Natives under 16 years of age are female, while in the 16-64 age group which comprises most of the total, 51% are female, and in the 65 and over group, 58% are female.
11. Project Summary: As part of SAMHSA’s efforts to provide resources to improve response to 988 contacts originating in Oklahoma Tribal jurisdictions, the SPTHB aims to (1): enhance activities that ensure access to culturally competent, trained 988 crisis center support staff, (2) ensure there is navigation and follow-up care by improving integration and support of 988 crisis centers, Tribal nation and Tribal organizations, and (3) facilitate collaborations with Tribal and non-tribal entities key to the success of 988 crisis centers while maintaining and respecting Tribal sovereignty. Three goals will be implemented to achieve these aims: (1): Increase activities that ensure access to trauma-informed, culturally competent, trained local 988 crisis center support staff to increase and improve utilization of 988 by NA/AI residing in the SPTHB catchment area. (2): Improve integration and support of 988 crisis centers, Tribal nations, and Tribal organizations in the SPTHB catchment area to ensure there is navigation and increased follow-up care for the described population of focus. (3): Increase collaborations with Tribal, state and territory health providers, Urban Indian Organization, law enforcement and other first responders in manner which respects Tribal sovereignty to reduce the risk of suicide in our population of focus.
