The Trojan Suicide Prevention Program (TSPP) is a multi-campus behavioral-health prevention and intervention initiative at Troy University’s Alabama campuses: Dothan, Montgomery, Phenix City, and Troy. Troy University has 9,539 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at the four Alabama campuses. Troy University has approximately 2,339 faculty and staff. TSSP aims to (1) increase Troy University’s capacity to expand awareness of behavioral health and suicide risk factors such as substance use, depression, anxiety, and high-risk populations such as LGBTQ+ and student veterans, (2) enhance the university community’s knowledge and awareness of mental health and wellness prevention resources, (3) improve access to prevention and intervention services to promote overall student well-being, (4) evaluate current behavioral health crises protocols to develop a decision tree for the university community outlining appropriate responses to behavioral health crises on campus with the goal of improving gatekeeping behaviors, and (5) promote help-seeking behaviors for the university community by reducing the stigma associated with mental health services and increasing protective factors. This comprehensive, collaborative, and innovative initiative will incorporate state, local, private and university resources to provide suicide prevention training, mental health outreach, substance use education, and behavioral health assessments and/or services for Trojan students, faculty, and staff. In year one of the initiative, we hope to serve 400; 1,600 in year two, and 3,200 in year three. An estimated 5,200 Trojans in total will be served over a three-year period.
