UMD Suicide Prevention Program Expansion - The University of Maryland Health Center is requesting funding to support students with mental health and substance use related concerns. While our University Health Center offers a myriad of resources spanning the prevention-intervention-treatment-recovery spectrum, we do not yet have a streamlined way to ensure students meaningfully engage with the services that are most appropriate for their unique wellness needs, beyond providing a standard referral, with little to no opportunity for follow-up unless initiated by the students themselves. This program emphasizes early identification and intervention through use of a universal screening at all student medical visits at the University Health Center, and through voluntary screening initiatives with higher-risk populations across campus, particularly veteran and military family students, LGBTQ+ students, and Indigenous students. Further, this program will integrate a social worker in the primary care setting to assist with referrals, linkages to treatment, and necessary follow-up. Through research, and our extensive treatment of students, our team knows that if a student leaves the office without connecting the resources that they are far less likely to follow up treatment in early intervention scenarios. As a final component of this funding request, we aim to strengthen recovery and support efforts for students experiencing mental health and/or substance use related concerns through the implementation of a Student Peer Support Network, as well as providing individualized follow-ups for students who have not yet engaged with our existing resources. Overarching goals are as follows: 1. Increase evidence-based screening and brief intervention strategies to identify students with mental health and substance use disorders. 2. Increase case management services in the primary care setting of the University Health Center as a means to enhance referral services and linkages to treatment. 3. Utilize SAMHSA’s Strategic Prevention Framework to mobilize medical, behavioral health, and public health staff through a collaborative committee to implement population level changes. 4. Expand the University Health Center Peer Education Program through the development of a Student Peer Support Network, training at least five students as peer support specialists in the areas of mental health and substance use.
