Youth Suicide Prevention in Minnesota, increasing protective factors while reducing risk factors through training and technical assistance. - The population of focus is all youth and young adults ages 10-24; while prioritizing the 12 counties in Minnesota with greater than 20 youth suicides between 2011-2020, and our American Indian youth and tribal communities. Having our program provide supports for the entire state, while targeting counties and communities of increased risk, allows for the grant funded coordinators to address immerging issues over the course of the five-year funding and beyond. Goal number one is to increase the number of schools, juvenile justice, foster care, and youth serving organizations implementing evidenced-based early intervention and suicide prevention policies and practices to identify and respond to youth with unmet mental health needs. By working with local youth serving organizations to implement gatekeeper trainings, pathways to care, and changing policies and practices around suicide prevention, youth will receive the care and coordinated services they deserve. Goal number two is to increase care management, access to mental health services, and follow-up for youth at risk of suicide or suicide attempts. We will utilize bhworks throughout schools and behavioral health systems to obtain consents, screen, assess, and treat school-age youth grade k-12 to reduce youth suicides and other mental health needs while streamlining confidential communication among staff, families, and providers. Goal number three is to increase help seeking behavior and improve youth access to care by promoting innovative outreach strategies, including 988, mobile crisis, and peer-to-peer interventions. We will promote throughout the educational systems and community’s crisis resources. We will work with local Boys and Girls Clubs as well as YMCA’s to identify curriculum that may be beneficial for peer to peer learning and interventions, Goal number four is to promote care and support to individuals and communities affected by suicide deaths/attempts to promote healing and community suicide prevention strategies. We will offer and promote Postvention trainings, within schools, communities, behavioral health/healthcare as well as within Juvenile Justice. If communities and organizations are doing good postvention, they are also doing prevention. Building the above supports and protective factors will have lasting impacts for the youth involved in our programming, well beyond just suicide prevention.
