Success After Trauma - DePelchin’s Success After Trauma Program aims to serve clients in Houston Texas and surrounding counties. DePelchin will provide trauma focused counseling to school age children; provide mental health awareness training to community members; support community partners in development of Trauma Informed Care approaches; and provide mental health response in the event of community level tragic events.
DePelchin will provide trauma informed services to youth, families, schools and other organizations in the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services Region 6, which includes Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Matagorda, Montgomery, Walker, Waller and Wharton counties. In their 2017 assessment of mental health services for children in Harris County, the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute estimated that in 2015, 250,000 children ages 6 to 17 had one or more diagnosable SED and further estimated that 15,000 children ages 12 to 17 had PTSD. It is DePelchin’s goal to provide school-based, trauma focused counseling services in multiple campuses through collaboration with Communities in the Schools, a non-profit agency that pairs underserved students with needed resources such as mental health services. DePelchin will also provide services at Las Americas Newcomer School, which focuses on serving students who have just arrived in the country. Community based counseling services will be offered throughout the region. While counseling services will focus on Harris County, DePelchin plans to provide support Region 6 through mental health awareness training and emergency response to traumatic events. In recent years, Region 6 has experienced multiple traumatic events including severe flooding from Hurricane Harvey and the tragic school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas. DePelchin will dedicate staff time to working with children in the aftermath of traumatic events, should similar experiences occur.
To achieve this, DePelchin will first provide direct counseling services to 400 youth through individual and group counseling across five years of the grant. Second, DePelchin will provide mental health awareness and prevention training in the community to 450 professionals and non-professionals. Third, DePelchin will offer emergency support in the event of a crisis such as school violence, natural disasters or other traumatic event occurring at the community level. Finally, DePelchin will guide partner agencies and schools in understanding trauma-informed approaches to services.
DePelchin holds multiple contracts with the State of Texas Health and Human Services and the Department of Family and Protective Services to provide counseling and parenting services. Through this collaboration, DePelchin will provide appropriate services to clients who cannot be served by the NCTSI project. DePelchin will collaborate with Local Mental Health Authorities in the counties served to ensure that clients and their families are well supported.
