Supporting Adolescent Mental Health (SAMH) - The Supporting Adolescent Mental Health project will allow Johnson County Mental Health Center (JCMHC) to provide mental health awareness training to school personnel, first responders, and peers of the target population (adolescents aged 12-18 in Olathe, Kansas) in order to appropriately and safely respond and help individuals in this target population, particularly those with serious mental illness (SMI) and/or severe emotional disturbance (SED). In addition to training personnel to build a community of helpers to support the target population, a streamlined referral process to connect adolescents to the appropriate level of care will be established, and resources and supports will be created in the form of written and electronic materials. Over the course of the project, JCMHC will train 4,040 unduplicated individuals.
Goal 1:Train individuals (school personnel, first responders, and peers) to recognize and appropriately respond to an adolescent experiencing and mental health concern or crisis.
1A) By September 30, 2022, 480 school personnel will be trained with 16 YMHFA sessions
1B) By September 30, 2026, 1,758 school personnel with 76 YMHFA and ASIST sessions
1C) By September 30, 2022, identify one OPS high school to pilot tMHFA
1D) By September 30, 2026, train 2,052 students with tMHFA sessions
1E) By September 30, 2022, train 110 first responders with 4 MHFA-PS sessions
1F) By September 30, 2026, train 230 first responders with 11 MHFA-PS and ASIST sessions
1G) At the end of each year of the grant, 85% of training participants will have increased their confidence in recognizing mental health concerns and connecting to care
1H) Complete Training for Trainers (T4T) for additional JCMHC staff (2-MHFA, 1-ASIST)
Goal 2: Establish a streamlined process to connect an adolescent experiencing a mental health concern or crisis to the appropriate level of care.
2A) By March 31, 2022, assess the current referral process and identify gaps
2B) By September 30, 2022, establish a streamlined referral process with partner organizations
2C) By September 30, 2023, implement streamlined referral process with partner organizations to establish baseline data of the utilization of JCMHC Open Access by adolescents
2D) By September 30, 2026, streamlined referral process with partner organizations leading to 25% increase in successful partner referrals of adolescents to JCMHC Open Access
Goal 3: Increase help-seeking behavior by reducing the stigma associated with mental health along with building awareness of available supports and services.
3A) By September 30, 2022, identify needed resources and supports
3B) By March 31, 2023, develop and distribute 20,000 written and electronic materials to individuals being trained and general community members
