UMUT Mental Health Awareness Training Initiative - The UMUT Mental Health Awareness Training Initiative will take the next logical step in creating a safe and thriving community – building a safety net of Tribal members prepared to identify the warning signs of mental health crises and practiced in taking immediate and appropriate action to connect individuals to the support they need. UMUT will leverage the evidence-based, eight-hour Youth Mental Health First Aid training, holding 12 sessions annually and reaching at least 260 individuals from all sectors of the community. Tribal staff, teachers, first responders, veterans and their families, parents, older students, and medical professionals will be recruited to complete trainings, which will be offered at Tribal facilities in multiple communities to reduce travel concerns and barriers associated with local poverty. The “population of focus” will include youth and young adults, the most vulnerable segment of the UMUT community. UMUT members report that the stigmas previously associated with alcohol abuse have largely abated, through the intentional and continual implementation of discussions, workshops, and prominent role models. Positive change is not only possible, but also within reach. It is crucial that this proven action plan is continued to be applied to the topic of mental health and suicide. UMUT opened the doors of Mógúán in mid-2019, representing the first-ever mental and behavioral health services available on Ute Tribal lands. The facility is fully staffed and ready to provide prevention and support. Efforts MUST be undertaken to ensure the community maintains a safety net of Mental Health First Aiders capable of recognizing warning signs and taking appropriate action. The overall goal is to sustainably build internal capacity to protect life on rural, isolated Tribal lands.
