MTSU 2021 MHAT Application - The Center for Health and Human Services (CHHS) at Middle Tennessee State University proposes to promote a culture of mental health awareness and increase access to mental health care on campus by providing Mental Health First Aid training for faculty, staff and MTSU students, with an additional focus on student-veterans and their families as well as under-served student populations such as minority and LGBTQ students. In addition to providing MHFA training to the immediate MTSU campus, CHHS also proposes to create a culture of mental health awareness across the Tennessee higher education community through the establishment of the Tennessee Higher Education Consortium on Mental Health. The challenges of mental health awareness and the ability to respond appropriately that MTSU experiences are mirrored across the state's higher education institutions, highlighting the need to share knowledge, best practices, and provide MHFA training to those campuses as well.
CHHS will provide training to individuals throughout MTSU's campus life: faculty, academic advisors, campus health services, clerical staff in Financial Aid, the Charlie and Hazel Daniels Veterans and Family Center, coaches, counseling services, resident directors and assistants, and students. There will be a targeted effort to reach and train students from the veteran, minority, and LGBTQ populations on campus. CHHS is will also provide training to individuals at other Tennessee higher education institutions at the direction of Consortium stakeholders.
The anticipated reach of this program is 1600 individuals trained in Mental Health First Aid with the resources to refer individuals in crisis to mental health providers.
