The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants’ Texas Field Office (USCRI-TX) Multicultural Mental Health Awareness (MMHA) program is designed to provide mental health awareness trainings that will equip key stakeholders with the skills and tools necessary to provide Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) that is responsive to the mental health needs of refugee and immigrant individuals experiencing serious mental illness (SMI) or severe emotional disturbance (SED). USCRI-TX proposes to deliver trainings to eligible individuals throughout the following cities in Texas: Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Abilene, Amarillo, Dallas, and Fort Worth. Eligible individuals will include: (1) refugee and immigrant community members; and (2) school and education personnel who provide services to the general public and to refugees and immigrants; and (3) medical primary care and specialty providers who provide services to the general public and to refugees and immigrants; and (4) social service providers from the private and public sectors who provide services to the general public and to refugees and immigrants. The project will provide trainings to 2700 individuals over a period of 5 years. Trainings will be designed to address the MHFA needs of Texas’ most prevalent refugees and immigrant communities, including Afghan, Burmese, Congolese, Cuban, Guatemala, Honduran, Iraqi, Salvadoran, Somali and Syrian populations USCRI Texas’ demonstrated experience providing culturally and linguistically appropriate mental health training ideally positions the agency to broaden the accessibility of MHFA training to these diverse yet underserved communities.
