Expanding CIT in Kansas will provide law enforcement agencies across the state the tools to recognize and respond to individuals with serious mental illness and strengthen collaboration between mental health providers and law enforcement so that those with mental illness can be linked to appropriate care. Individuals who have experienced serious psychological distress are more likely to be arrested or be involved in the justice system. Rural and smaller metropolitan communities in Kansas have seen a significant rise in the rate of pretrial incarceration, but budget and personnel limitations often make it difficult for law enforcements agencies in those communities to access training and resources to address these challenges. Expanding CIT in Kansas will implement a full continuum of training for the evidence-based practice of CIT that communities across the state can access. This continuum will include mental health awareness and response training for officers and support to establish and sustain CIT Councils to ensure collaboration and linkages between law enforcement and mental health stakeholders. Expanding CIT in Kansas will enable at least 175 officers to participate in either basic or advanced CIT training and 5 new communities will initiate CIT Council activities yearly.
