The North Carolina Juvenile Justice Statewide Mental Health Awareness Training Initiative is a plan to train all NC juvenile justice direct-care staff in facilities, court services, and select community programs in the areas of mental health and trauma awareness. The five year plan will involve a multi-disciplinary group of staff being certified as instructors for two evidence based trainings (Youth Mental Health First Aid and Think Trauma) and then training their respective areas within Juvenile Justice. The evidence based trainings will be enhanced by a lived experience training led by youth and family community partners. The desired outcome of the training is that appropriate mental health service referrals will increase and further collaboration with community partners will be enhanced.
