This grant will fund the implementation of The Mental Health Service Provision and Awareness Program (MHSPAP) in Canutillo Independent School District (CISD) and neighboring areas; a district wide intervention program that provides evidence based trainings from a top-down approach. This project highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration for referrals and the training of CISD and community partners. The program created a network of care that addresses different levels of risk and address referrals; participant agencies are Project Vida Health Center (PVHC), Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSCEP) , El Paso Child Guidance Center (EPCGC) and PEAK Behavioral Services (PEAK). Other community partners involved in this project include key CISD personnel, parent liaison groups, University of Texas at El Paso students and staff, law enforcement and behavioral health personnel. Canutillo Independent School District has 10 schools that will implement Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA), Why Try, Rethink, Sources of Strength, Circles of Care an adaptation of SAP, and Crisis Prevention Institute Non-Violent Intervention Training. The first year will focus on the training of all educators and community partners in the MHFA and YMHFA program. Years two to five will be spent implementing the training of trainers (ToT) curriculum so that the program delivery can be increased as trainers increase. Students will begin to participate in the intervention programs starting in the first year and adding more participants the remaining four years as trainers’ increase. The grant will also focus on providing training to two individuals on Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training by Crisis Prevention Institute. These trainers in turn will then train school personnel, behavioral health providers and law enforcement. By the end of the fifth year the goal will be to present Region 19 Education Service Center with a model that can be implemented region wide so that mental health along the 2,000-mile-long US Mexico Border Region.
