MHMR Services for the Concho Valley (MHMRCV), serving seven counties in West Texas, proposes to train 1,845 unduplicated individuals (369 per year) over the next 5 years to recognize signs and symptoms of mental illness, de-scalation techniques linkage to mental health services. The project entitled "Concho Valley Mental Health Awareness Training" will target community members focusing on Service Members, Veterans and Families (SVMF), first responders, an those affiliated with the education system, as these groups have the greatest need for training regarding mental illness, suicide prevention and distress. MHMRCV will utilize Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) as the primary curriculum for training, as it is evidenced-based, interactive, and provides participants with an overall of mental illnesses and substance use disorders, as well as, teaches how to effectively respond to a person in a mental health crisis. MHFA is relevant to our target population as it builds a better understanding of the impact of mental health issues and effective treatments. The total five-year project would be train 1, 845 people in MHFA resulting in a 129% increase annually from MHMRCV's fiscal year 2020 to accomplish this the following goals must be achieved: 1. To increase training opportunities for our focused population to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental illness and mental health crisis by the end of year one, and each subsequent year, of the 369 new individuals trained, 40% will be the SMVF population (accounting for 148 individuals), 10% will be first responders (accounting for 37 individuals), and 50% will be educators (accounting for 185 individuals). 2. Increase the number of MHFA classes offered monthly from 2 to 4. 3. Increase the knowledge of the general public in areas of mental illnesses and mental health crisis of publicizes evidenced-based programs offered by the MHMRCV and local providers. Within 30 days of grant approval, MHMRCV will initiate a social media campaign that post weekly with information on how to receive MHFA trainings. MHMRCV interacts daily with community partners and businesses on Facebook, and believes social media is a platform to be used to spread awareness about evidenced-based practices, information about our services, and offering trainings to our community. MHMRCV will also develop a referral and resource guide within 30 days of grant approval. This resource guide will be provided to the general public as a linkage to mental health services, resources, and training for mental health crisis prevention. It will aslo be available electronically to school district and community partners.
