The Central Oklahoma American Indian Health Council, Inc. dba Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC) proposes this five-year Native Connections project to serve American Indian (AI) patients under the age of 24 living in central Oklahoma. Through the proposed project, OKCIC will host a variety of cultural events which will promote suicide prevention and substance use awareness to this historically underserved population. OKCIC’s dedicated behavioral health department, in conjunction with the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (HPDP) program, will serve 500 AIs in Year 1 and grow to serve 575 individuals in Year 5, for a total of 2,665 individuals served through this unique combination of evidence-based and culturally oriented prevention activities. The clinic will also continue leveraging existing partnerships with external stakeholders, including Oklahoma City Public Schools and local college-aged mentors, to grow community awareness around the behavioral health issues facing AI youth. OKCIC’s Communications department will assist through a targeted awareness campaign, ensuring that our target population is served through a wide-reaching combination of events, clinical services, and social media resources.
