LUK Crisis Center, Inc. (LUK) will increase access to evidence-based child trauma treatments in Central Massachusetts in partnership with Community Healthlink (CHL) and the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (MSPCC). In addition, LUK will provide training on trauma-informed practices to child-serving systems. LUK’s Central Massachusetts Child Trauma Center (CMCTC) will serve 650 children and youth ages 0-18 who have experienced one or more traumatic events and their families. Among CMCTC’s goals are: To build sustainable capacity of providers to identify and treat trauma symptoms among children and their families using evidence-based treatments (EBTs); To improve the functioning of children/youth and caregiving systems; To support child-serving systems’ learning about and adoption of trauma-informed practices; and To enhance best practices in the field by supporting the work of others. In order to achieve these goals, CMCTC will offer training to 54 mental health providers in the Attachment, Self-Regulation, and Competency (ARC)/ARC Grow models throughout the five years of the project. In addition, we plan to train a small cohort of four mental health clinicians in the Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). While we expect to treat 650 children and families with the EBTs, we plan to enroll 400 children and families in the CMCTC evaluation over the five years of the project (Year 1: 50, Years 2, 3, 4: 100 each, and Year 5: 50). Based on a screening and assessment, the treatment team will determine which model is the best fit for the family. PCIT will be utilized with younger children under age 7 whereas ARC and ARC Grow will be used with children to age 18. ARC Grow and PCIT both focus on the caregiver in order to provide a supportive environment where the child can recover from traumatic experiences. We anticipate that, by discharge, 75% of children/youth demonstrate improved overall functioning and a decrease in problem behaviors/symptoms. In addition, we anticipate that, by discharge, 75% of parents/caregivers report improved social connectedness and decreased parental stress. CMCTC has a documented history of creating positive systemic changes for children impacted by the effects of trauma. CMCTC will bring this knowledge to the child-serving systems in Central Massachusetts by providing culturally competent trauma-informed trainings and delivering trauma-informed curricula on the impact of child traumatic stress. CMCTC will provide trauma-informing training to 300 staff of child-serving systems (e.g., schools, child welfare) annually (n=1,500 over five years) in order to facilitate early identification and referral to treatment.We expect that 85% of trauma-informed training participants increased knowledge of the impact of trauma on children.
