Pinoleville Pomo Nation is seeking federal assistance through Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to promote early intervention strategies and implement positive youth development programming to reduce risk factors for suicide behavior and substance misuse. The project will partner with youth service agencies to implement three major goals to address critical challenges faced by the Native youth (8-24) in our area. A. Establish behavior health staff capacity including LCSW specializing in child, adolescent and family services to implement the following programs: Youth Program using evidence-based and practice-based approaches specifically designed or modified for AI/AN youth population to build resiliency, promote positive development, reduce the impact of trauma and increase awareness of mental health and substance abuse & misuse among Native youth. • Evidence-based practices: Wellbriety/Celebrating Families, Train facilitators to start White Bison WellBriety Movement in the Tribal Community and engage youth to commit to a life of wellness and healing every day. LCSW will use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and all program staff will use Motivational Interviewing (MI) when working with AI/NA youth and their families. • Youth Talking Circle: Forming and facilitating two youth talking circles using Wellbriety youth curriculums Sons of Tradition and Daughters of Tradition. • Family Camp: A week-long summer Family Campout to serve up to 10-15 AI/AN youth and their families. Workshops addressing: suicide, drug misuse, mental health needs and a Rites of Passage will be provided. The camp will promote family engagement through cultural activities such as: singing/dancing, regalia making, language, traditional hand games. B. Expand Suicide and Mental Health Community Prevention Education • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST): 2 trainings per year • Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR): 30-50 people to be trained in QPR per year • Mental Health First-aid for Youth: 30-50 people to be trained each year. • 3-day Native HOPE training: 25-50 youth to be trained each year. C. Develop with Tribal Youth Council goals and action plan for implementation • Technical Support: Assist in Tribal Youth Council (TYC) monthly meeting, goal setting and action plan • Implementation of youth-developed action plan and activities: Working with TYC to implement current list of activities developed by TYC.
