Through the Native Connections Program, Tucson Indian Center (TIC) aims to prevent substance misuse and suicide among urban American Indian/Alaska Native youth and young adults by leading a local interagency taskforce charged with reviewing policies and protocols and providing evidence based education and training to at least 650 youth, personnel, and community members. Community campaigns will reach thousands of people. The TIC is one of thirty-four 501c3 organizations funded through the US HHS Indian Health Services Urban Indian Health Program. It provides urban American Indian/Alaska Native youth, adults and Elders enrolled with a federally recognized tribe with social and wellness services. The goals the Native Connections Program at TIC are to 1) Elevate the capacity of the TIC and service providers to prevent, care for, and follow up regarding substance misuse and suicide among urban AI/AN youth by developing and refining sound policies, procedures and protocols through community partnerships and collaboration, and 2) Prevent substance misuse and prevent suicide among urban American Indians/Alaska Native youth through the age of 24 years through the implementation of evidence- based intervention and support practices. The TIC will achieve these goals through the following seven measurable objectives over the course of five years: 1.1) By August 2020, Tucson Indian Center will convene an inter-agency Task Force charged with joint review and development of policies and procedures that promote coordination of services to prevent suicide and substance misuse; 1.2) By August of 2020, TIC will conduct an annual internal review of, and update to, its own policies and procedures related to suicide prevention, follow up services, “post-vention” and substance abuse with the purpose of aligning with evidence-based practices; 1.3) By December of 2020, TIC will launch a feasibility study for the provision of behavioral health services at the Center, including the identification of accreditation options and a third-party billing revenue program; 2.1) By October of 2020, TIC will deliver a locally and culturally relevant substance misuse /suicide prevention curriculum, such as Native Pride, via an afterschool/summer school program to at least 40 youth annually; 2.2) By April of 2021, TIC will deliver Question Persuade and Refer (QPR) training to 30 community members annually; 2.3) By April of 2021, TIC will deliver Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) training to at least 10 TIC Wellness Program staff members and collaborating professionals annually; 2.4) By September 2020, TIC will utilize the National American Indian/Alaska Native Hope for Life Day Toolkit as part of a series of public messaging to a minimum of 3000 newsletter subscribers and conduct community activities for a minimum of 50 community members during National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.
