ABSTRACT The Coyote Valley Band of Pomo Indians Tribal Behavioral Health Grant Program supports the health and wellbeing of Native youth in rural Mendocino County, California by connecting culture, community and families, addressing preventative measures and healing to eliminate youth suicide and substance abuse. The program will reach 175 youth and 75 adult family members annually for a total population served over the duration of the program period of 1,250. Pre-Goals: To meet the required activities before commencing project goals and objectives. By the end of project month 4, develop policies and protocols as detailed in section B2 below and evaluate and identify evidence based best practices for incorporation into all project activities. Goal One: To reduce substance use among youth through community, prevention and treatment. Objective 1: Hire a Youth-focused Behavioral Health Coach. Objective 2: Send the new Behavioral Health Coach to relevant training to fulfill the position duties. Objective 3: Conduct prevention education and services outreach activities to target population and their families. Objective 4, Conduct intake assessments. Objective 5: Conduct culturally relevant, clean and sober youth events to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle. Objective 6: Send two project staff to training for facilitating youth programs, such as White Bison’s “Understanding the Purpose of Life”. Objective 7: Implement the curriculum and host youth groups weekly. Goal Two: To increase the capability of the community to prevent youth suicide by engaging education, connections and response. Objective 1: Train a team youth in age-specific suicide awareness and response to serve as peer mentors. Objective 2: Provide suicide awareness and response training to parents, grandparents and aunts/uncles, and annually thereafter. Objective 3: Engage adult mentors to plan, implement and tend a natural medicine garden. Objective 4: Provide monthly cooking & nutrition classes focused on developing youth skills and abilities with budget friendly items. Objective 5: Provide monthly career development sessions focused on youth skill development and insight into possible career pathways. Objective 6: Provide monthly cultural connectivity programs to youth including workshops, field trips. Goal Three: To identify and address mental health needs among youth. Objective 1: Provide on-site talking circles or peer support groups facilitated by a Cultural Advisor. Objective 2: Implement an outreach campaign for all Native youth to help reduce the stigma of addressing mental health needs and bring awareness to resources available. Objective 3: Host annual education events to increase youth, family and provider awareness of ACES and how to prevent, respond to and heal. Objective 4: Take youth to youth-leadership focused conferences and trainings.
