The Seneca Nation’s Native Connections Program will increase the health and well-being of children and families by enhancing and expanding services that mitigate or eliminate the risk of suicide and drug and alcohol misuse. The target population for this program is Seneca youth ages 10 to 24. The geographical catchment area is the Seneca Nation’s residential territories (Allegany and Cattaraugus) and four Western New York school districts. The Family Engagement Program will increase services to an additional 300 families by providing prevention programming to four additional youth serving programs, conducting 60 workshops focused on youth and/or family members who are at risk for suicide and/or drug and alcohol misuse. The program will increase the community’s capacity to respond to youth at risk for suicide and/or drug and alcohol misuse by providing 50 suicide intervention trainings such as ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, safeTALK) and access to six evidenced-based suicide, drug and alcohol misuse prevention and intervention curriculum in eight school districts. The program has three overarching goals. Goal 1: Community Planning and Assessment: The program will increase health and well-being of Native youth and families by enhancing and expanding services that mitigate or eliminate the risk of suicide and drug and alcohol misuse using a culturally responsive, community and youth driven planning/implementation process. Goal 2: Prevention/Intervention Programs and Services: The program will implement culturally responsive, community/youth driven evidence-based prevention and intervention strategies that mitigate or eliminate risk of suicide and drug and alcohol misuse among Native youth. Goal 3: Preventive/Intervention Trainings: The program will be the catalyst for training and education on evidence-based prevention/intervention strategies proven to have shown a positive effect on the mitigation and/or elimination of risk of suicide and drug and alcohol misuse among Native youth 24 years. Native Connections will provide the following services/programs: prevention education services in local school districts/youth-serving programs; the Clubhouse at the Cattaraugus Territory, providing a safe place for youth that includes skill-building, pro-social, wellness, educational, vocational and recreational activities; the Family Engagement Program, providing workshops, activities, referrals, support and training to families to promote positive relationship building and connectedness; prevention and intervention outreach and education campaigns; traditional Talking Circles for youth experiencing specific traumas or issues culturally responsive supportive and guided ; and Teen Intervene, providing education and guidance for teens who are at-risk for drug and/or alcohol addiction. The Native Connections Program will increase the Prevention Team’s ability to train community, youth and partnering agencies in suicide intervention by having 100% of the Prevention Team trained to train in LivingWorks ASIST or safeTALK.
