The Marshall Islands has a mental health service gap where people who may be living with mental health illness disorders are not receiving the help or treatment that they need. The Marshall Islands Mental Health First Aid Project (MI-MHFA) proposed is designed to engage community agencies and individuals to be trained to better identify, understand and respond to symptoms and signs of mental health illness disorders. The Program will train and certify 6 Mental Health First Aid Instructors to provide trainings at least 620 individuals in local communities on Majuro, Marshall Islands. The project aims to long-term mental health promotion and community linkages; and continue to build a strong state infrastructure to address mental health issues. Targeted communities for trainings include health care workers, mental health workers, law enforcement agencies, emergency responders, faith based members, members of the LGBTQ community and military families and veterans. The MI-MHFA will establish a MI-MHFA Advisory council as a community collaboration mechanism to support project efforts and develop a strong referral mechanism. The program will report on the follow performance measures are required under the SAMHSA MHAT Grant: 1) The number of people in the mental health and related workforce trained in mental health-related practices/activities that are consistent with the goals of the MI-MHFA project.; 2) The number of individuals who have received training in prevention or mental health promotion.; and 3) The number of individuals referred to mental health or related services.
