EmPoWER Somerset (EmPoWER) is a non-profit organization in Somerset County, NJ that assists individuals and families in making positive lifestyle choices and fosters healthy, drug-free communities through education, collaboration, and connections to resources. EmPoWER is also the managing agency of the Pioneer Family Success Center, a community gathering place that connects families to helpful resources in the county and brings families together through free and local events. Through this funding opportunity, EmPoWER will increase mental health awareness among targeted populations: youth-serving professionals, veterans, soldiers, and individuals who work with veterans and soldiers. The population of focus for which the training is intended to help is youth and the armed forces. Somerset County, NJ is the geographic catchment area where training and services will be delivered. EmPoWER Somerset will accomplish the following tasks: (1) Train individuals (e.g., school personnel, emergency first responders, law enforcement, veterans, armed services members and their families) to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental disorders, particularly serious mental illness (SMI) and/or serious emotional disturbance (SED); (2) Establish linkages with school- and/or community-based mental health agencies to refer individuals with the signs or symptoms of mental illness to appropriate services; (3) Train emergency services personnel, veterans, law enforcement, fire department personnel, and others to identify persons with a mental disorder and employ crisis de-escalation techniques; and (4) Educate individuals about resources that are available in the community for individuals with a mental disorder. Through this program, EmPoWER Somerset will prepare and train others on how to appropriately and safely respond to individuals with mental disorders, particularly individuals with SMI and/or SED.
