Project Insight will provide Mental Health Awareness Training to first responders in Region 5 of Alabama's Emergency Medical System which includes 18 counties in Southeastern Alabama. The project will provide Mental Health First Aid to 60 EMS responders annually for a total of 180 persons over the three years. The project will be implemented through the Council on Substance Abuse-NCADD's Education and Training Institute (ETI) and will provide a minimum of 6 trainings annually so that one training is held in each of the 18 counties over the 3 year grant period. The project's goal is to "improve the care of persons in crisis who have a mental health (illness and/or substance use) diagnosis through the provision of an educated response to individuals and families within Region 5. The project's three objectives are: 1) to train 60 EMS responders in Region 5 annually in MHFA; 2) to increase and track referrals for mental health services by trained EMS personnel in Region 5; and 3) to sustain the provision of training and education services by certifying an individual in each service county to serve as an adult and youth trainer of MHFA. COSA-NCADD will contract with Southeastern Research to provide evaluation services and will partner with Montgomery Area Mental Health Authority to provide mental illness services.
