FUSE-II (Facilitating United Service Efforts-II) integrates mental health (MH) and co-occurring disorder (COD) treatment with HIV primary care and HIV/viral hepatitis (VH) prevention services at Positive Impact Health Centers, a 25 year-old AIDS Service Organization in the Atlanta, GA area. During the four-year project, 880 individuals will enroll in culturally competent and evidence based services, including peer support; 525 will receive HIV and Hepatitis testing/vaccination series. Outreach and case management will be provided and consumers can access to psychiatry, and vocational services. FUSE II expands and enhances treatment provided through FUSE, PIHC’s current SAMHSA-funded program. It increases the number of clients served and adds trauma-focused and other Evidence Based Practices: Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, Wellness Recovery Action Plan and Motivational Enhancement Therapy. The program serves adults with a serious mental illness (SMI) or co-occurring disorder1 (COD) living with or at risk for HIV and/or hepatitis, including from racial and ethnic minority communities. Based on PIHC demographics, the majority of FUSE-II consumers will be African Americans. The Atlanta area has one of the worst HIV epidemics in the country whether measured by total people living with HIV (PLWH), minority health disparities, new diagnoses, or poor health outcomes. HIV is more than 16 times more prevalent in Atlanta than in the U.S.i as a whole. Rates of SMI/COD among PLWH are twice that of the general population;ii unmet need for MH/SA services in the Atlanta area among Ryan White consumers is 52%.iii This unmet need results in increased HIV/VH risk behavior and poor medical care adherence.iv FUSE-II meets this need and improves health/mental health for people living with SMI/COD.
