The overarching goal of the Promotores/Community Behavioral Health Outreach Worker program is to provide the bridge within the school community between Spanish-speaking and Latinx students and parents and appropriate behavioral health care. There is a spectrum of appropriate behavioral health care, ranging from prevention to early intervention to full treatment services, and increasing access and linkage to mental health services is the primary goal. In order to reach this goal, community-based strategies are used to increase awareness of mental health issues, as well as decrease the stigma and discrimination associated with seeking services. Promotores/CBHOW will engage the community to promote mental health and wellbeing by building relationships, increasing protective factors and reducing the risk for developing a potentially serious mental health condition. When appropriate, Promotores/CBHOW will link those who are experiencing mental illness to the Mental Health Clinicians for short-term Brief Intervention Counseling or higher levels of mental health services when necessary.
