Just as communities nationwide have demanded alternatives to police response to behavioral health crises, California's Contra Costa County residents have likewise demanded increased behavioral health crisis services. Contra Costa Behavioral Health Services (CCBHS) proposes to expand existing Mobile Crisis Response Teams (MCRTs) to more fully address the behavioral health needs of County residents by adding two teams to more rapidly respond to residents in crisis than is currently possible with existing staff given the increasing need for emergency response over the past years and the large geographic area of Contra Costa, with long travel times from west to the east county especially during commute hours. With the increased numbers of residents experiencing substance use issues, CCBHS also proposes adding substance use counselors to teams to more effectively address crises related to substance use and co-occurring conditions. The additional MCRT staffing would come to a cost of $1,061,522.
