Governors State University (GSU) will increase the number of health practitioners who are trained in of substance use disorders (SUD). This project will enhance the competencies of graduate students in Mental Health Counseling (MHC), Occupational Therapy (OT), and Physical Therapy (PT) to address substance misuse and disorders within their clinical practice settings. They will be trained in the Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBRIT) protocol. Training initiatives in SBIRT primarily have focused on physicians and their assistants, psychologists, and social workers. However, there is a strong likelihood that people with undiagnosed SUD are engaged in MHC, OT, and/or PT services. These health professionals typically work with clients across multiple sessions, enabling them to continue the dialogue about substance misuse. Health professionals can offer clients alternatives to opioid medications for the treatment of pain, reducing the possibility of developing an opioid use disorder. In order to achieve the goals of increasing the number of practitioners competent in understanding SUD, we will create 10 evidenced-based training modules in a video, web-based format and integrate them into the curriculum at three universities. A video, web-based format allows for easier access to training and has the advantages associated with multi-media training. Objectives: 1. Create ten video, web-based training modules on SUD. 2. In the first year at least 75 student and practitioners will access and provide feedback. 3. Two additional two universities (Florida Gulf Coast University [FGCU] and North Carolina A&T State University [NCAT]) will integrate the modules into their curriculum. 4. During the two-year project at least 200 students will participate in the module training. 5. In future years at least 100 practitioners-in-training will be trained on SUD modules each year across the three universities. 6. In year two each of the universities will liaison with accrediting agencies for each of their programs and licensure boards in each of their states to advocate for the inclusion of more SUD training. 7. At least 25% of participants will identify as part of an underrepresented group. GSU is a minority serving institution, NCAT is a Historically Black University, and FGCU is an emerging Hispanic Serving Institution with 20% Hispanic enrollment.
