Ryan White Part C Outpatient EIS Program - Abstract - Project Title: Ryan White Part C Early Intervention Services Program - Applicant Organization Name: Wake Forest University Health Sciences - Address: Medical Center Blvd, Winston-Salem, NC, 27157 - Project Director Name: Aimee Wilkin, MD, MPH - Contact Phone Numbers: 336-716-8978; 336-716-3825 (FAX) - Email Address: awilkin@wakehealth.edu - Website Address: www.wakehealth.edu/Specialty/i/Infectious-Diseases - Grant Program Funds Requested: $659,318/yr for three years - Funding preference/priority: Increased burden, Rural areas; Underserved Since 1983, the Infectious Diseases Specialty Clinic (IDSC) of Wake Forest University Health Sciences (WFUHS) has provided the highest quality care to individuals living with HIV in the Central North Carolina counties of Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, Iredell, Rowan, Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin. Care is provided on the main campus of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, as well as clinics in High Point and Lexington. In calendar year 2023, the ID Specialty Clinic (IDSC) provided care to 1,938 individuals. These were 68% male, 31% female, and 2% identifying as transgendered. Fifty-eight percent (58%) of those served identify as Black/African American, 28% as white, with 12% identifying as Hispanic/Latino(a). The majority of those receiving care (64%) are aged 45 and above and 31% are between the ages of 25 – 44. The youth population is about 4% , but remains a high need population of focus. Sixty-four percent of the whole clinic population (64%) report living at or below the federal poverty level. This region was significantly impacted by the 2020 COVID recession and continues to recover. North Carolina recently expanded Medicaid benefits in January 2024 and many patients are now eligible for Medicaid coverage. The North Carolina Department of Public Health estimates that there are 5,747 individuals living with HIV in this service region. There have been 226 new cases of HIV infection reported in the region in 2022. The number of people living with HIV infection has steadily increased as new diagnoses continue and people survive longer. It is estimated that 12% of people in the state living with HIV infection are unaware of their status. The ID Specialty Clinic of Wake Forest Baptist Health requests $659,318 per year for three years to support continued quality HIV care services to a largely minority and rural population, especially minority women, youth, and men of color who have sex with men. These services include medical evaluation and clinical care, referrals to needed healthcare services including specialty care and oral health care, linkages to clinical trials, and coordination and linkages to other HIV service programs.
