HHS-2022-IHS-UIHP2-0001 IHS 4 in 1 Project Abstract The Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake (UICSL) is a designated 501(c) 3 non-profit organization. Established in 1974, UICSL is recognized by the Indian Health Service as a funded Title V Urban Indian Health Program (UIHP) of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act (IHCIA) of 1996. Originally known as “The Indian Walk in Center,” UICSL, in collaboration with other state and local agencies, offers job placement and training, emergency food assistance, and a variety of social services. In 2012, the center was renamed, the “Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake.” UICSL is now a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) look-alike, and is classified by the Indian Health Service (IHS) as a Limited Health Care and Outreach Referral Service and Urban Indian Health Organization (UIHO) within the I/T/U. The Center exists to meet the medical, behavioral health, and cultural needs of American Indians/Native Alaskans residing in the metropolitan Salt Lake area, using the following as its guiding principles: VISION: UICSL envisions all Native peoples living balanced, prosperous, and healthy lives in diverse communities. MISSION: Serving The People by honoring Native cultures, strengthening health and wellness programs and cultivating community Demonstrated and significant unmet needs of the American Indian/Alaska Native community of the greater Salt Lake area include greater access to immunizations with low or no cost out of pocket, culturally-centered health education and access to culturally sensitive mental health services in a safe and familiar setting. The UICSL proposes a 4 in 1 interdisciplinary project that will be augmented by its three primary departments; Red Mesa Behavioral Health, Cedar Point Wellness, and Sacred Paths Youth and Family Program. Red Mesa will carry out mental health programming, Cedar Point will provide immunization services, while Sacred Paths will provide health promotion/disease prevention activities and alcohol/substance abuse prevention education to youth and families. Together, all three departments will participate in concerted health promotion/disease prevention activities, including an annual back to school health fair. Focused objectives include increasing influenza vaccine rates among AI/AN children and adults, better tracking, and assessing need for childhood immunizations by using electronic health record and state immunization information systems. Providing increased mental health services and culturally focused afterschool youth and family programming to educate on the importance of disease prevention and alcohol and substance abuse related topics will be key components as well. The UICSL has a proven record of providing holistic, culturally-centered wellness programs to the AI/AN community of the greater salt Lake area. The Center considers the ability continue providing and expanding such services into the foreseeable future key to its primary guiding principles and central mission.
