Project Abstract. The NATIVE Project (hereafter NATIVE) has set forth its plan to address the needs of the patients and community in the urban setting of Spokane. The American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN) population of Spokane has been undercounted for years and their health needs have been underserved. NATIVE participated in the health inequities report by the Spokane Regional Health District in 2012. While all entities including NATIVE have been working diligently to address these health inequities, it has been difficult. With the onset of the pandemic in early 2020, the AIAN population has continued to suffer from health inequities. The plan of NATIVE is to address the needs of patients and the community in each of the areas set forth in the 4-in1 funding. Under the Health Promotion/Disease Prevention, NATIVE believes that education, offering wellness activities and screening for health conditions are all effective methods of closing the gap in health inequities. Offering healthy activities with virtual outreach to children and families is a way to give patients a sense of community when it is difficult for everyone to get together. In addition, these activities also offer opportunities for health education for patients and the community such as the need for immunization, the need for cancer screenings, the need for healthy eating choices and for healthy physical and cultural activities. Under immunizations, NATIVE is working with patients to ensure they are getting appropriate vaccines so the patients, their families and the community will stay healthy and avoid such illnesses such as the flu and pneumonia as well as Covid-19. The area of Substance Use Disorder is also an area which has been hit hard by the pandemic. Patients and their families are less likely to get the assistance they need in this area and many treatment facilities were not readily available for services. The area of Mental health has also been hit quite hard with the pandemic. There has been an increa se in the number of people, adults and children, who have been anxious and may have depression. The Behavioral health problems have been reaching out to patients and screening patient in the areas of SUD and MH. Open access is offered to patients so their issues can be addressed right away. In addition, with care plans and follow-up, these patients are tracked to make sure they are getting the care needed. NATIVE Is also offering Wellness classes to both patients and staff to offer additional resources and connections.
