ABSTRACT United American Indian Involvement, Inc. (UAII) is an Urban Indian Organization (UIO) non-profit 501c(3) provider of comprehensive health and human services for the urban American Indian and Alaskan Native (AI/AN) community in Southern California. UAII converts what have traditionally been reactionary health and human service responses into a culturally responsive, proactive movement for community empowerment. The global pandemic has magnified the issues that persist including cycles of poverty, alcohol and other drug use, unemployment, homelessness, social violence, suicidal ideation, and generational trauma which contribute to physical health accessibility and the major mental health challenges facing AI/AN communities in urban areas. This is particularly true in the Greater Los Angeles area, home to more AI/AN people than any other urban/ metropolitan region in the United States. In the state of California, 90% of AI/AN people reside in urban centers, yet inclusive services that address the unique cultural needs of Native Americans are limited, and the need for integrative, whole-person care is significant. The pandemic has tested UAII’s integrative pathways, and shown the ever-present and evolving needs expressed by our AI/AN client base during this vulnerable time. The COVID crisis has created a number of opportunities for UAII to continue improvements that will benefit our patients during- and post-recovery. Deepening our integrative model with funding for expanded capacity, increasing provider reach and access to care during this vulnerable time, and continuing to empower our historically disenfranchised AI/AN community with culturally appropriate services, will help our Native community heal even further, now and for future generations. Our objectives are to: - Emphasize a new focus on post-pandemic recovery through education, screening, and promotion of lifelong healthy behavior specifically as it relates to prevention and treatment of hypertension. - Identify those without immunization, provide education, promote vaccinations, and increase immunizations within the AI/AN community - Address the psychosocial and emotional needs of the AI/AN community through community outreach and bi-annual staff training - Provide culturally-sensitive substance abuse prevention through youth-focused programming, aligning with UAII’s vision to promote healthy lifestyles for future generations At UAII, our goal with the 4-in-1 project is to continue to expand our integrations between primary and mental/ behavioral care, into what UAII clients have come to expect as one coordinated system of care – through an expansion including both our one-stop model at headquarters, and distributed throughout the greater metropolitan region at our satellite site locations.
