Poisoning is a much larger public health problem than has generally been recognized and continues across the entire lifespan. In addition, new concerns about biological and chemical terrorist acts have elevated poisoning surveillance to a national security issue of public health importance. Poison control service is needed for 6.9 million Tennessee residents. Tennessee Poison Center (TPC) is the statewide poison control center serving all 95 counties. TPC is requesting $474,616 in federal funds to assist in providing a comprehensive system for the delivery of high-quality poison control services in Tennessee. TPC operates on a very limited patchwork of local, state and federal funding. Without federal funding, TPC would not be able to provide its services statewide. PROPOSED SERVICES: TPC will use funds to 1) prevent and provide treatment recommendations for poisonings; 2) comply with operational requirements to sustain accreditation with the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC); and GOALS: The primary goal of the project is to provide a nationally accredited poison control center for 6.9 million Tennessee residents in 95 counties. A second goal is to provide efficient and effective hotline service, poison prevention education, and quality data for all 95 counties according to AAPCC and HRSA standards. The federal funds will be used to complete the following objectives (some of which are directly adapted/quoted from the Notice of Funding Opportunity HRSA-24-045): 1) Provide salary support for four Poison Control Specialists who provide treatment recommendation;. 2) Provide funds for poison prevention materials to distribute to 95 Tennessee counties; 3) Provide high-quality, locally informed guidance and treatment recommendations when poisonings occur; 4) Ensure that human exposure poisoning cases receive a complete follow up contact, when indicated; 5) Develop and follow procedures to collect high quality data related to all calls; 6) Enter these data in NPDS for toxic exposure surveillance purposes; 7) Use data to inform the public health preparedness and response; and 8) Communicate with the Poison Help Desk regarding any changes or problems with the routing service.
