The Pittsburgh Poison Center (PPC) has a primary mission of preventing morbidity and mortality due to both unintentional and intentional poisoning. The mission is accomplished largely by providing uninterrupted 24/7 poison information and treatment services to the residents of 44 of the 67 counties in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The largest amount of the requested funds will be used to achieve this primary mission by funding specialists in poison information (SPIs) to answer the telephone inquiries that are received at the PPC. Without adequate staffing, the PPC would not be able to address the needs of the community in a timely fashion. The activities of the PPC are complimentary to the goals of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Healthy People 2030 goals, including but not limited to: injury prevention, addiction, drug and alcohol use, emergency preparedness, and injury prevention in all population groups. This is particularly true in the Educational and Community-Based Programs that the PPC is involved with, preventing injury as a result of poisoning. Significant efforts are also made for preventing harm associated with substance abuse and misuse. Poison Center data is also used to monitor for trends in poisonings, identification of public health threats, and emerging drugs of abuse. This data is evaluated in real-time by a data feed to the National Poison Data System (NDPS).
