Purpose and Impact: The resources provided from this grant program will benefit California Poison Control System’s programs and services to prevent an increase in poisoning deaths and to prevent an increase in nonfatal poisonings. The California Poison Control System (CPCS) will ensure that access is available to Californians for poison prevention/information and treatment recommendations via toll free access to the CPCS health professionals 24/7/365. Additionally, access to poison prevention education, awareness, and outreach is available for Californians with a focus on diverse populations and languages of underserved populations. Needs to be addressed and population served: CPCS services are available to all Californians. U.S. census estimates the state of California had a total population of over 39.0 million people in 2022. Annually, calls received by CPCS result in more than 240,000 poison cases that need to be managed by CPCS health professional staff members. To effectively manage these cases, staff members must provide assessment, triage, management, and continued monitoring of these exposures at no direct cost to the public patient population, the practitioner, or health care institution. Language translation services are also required and provided for the diverse California population. Healthcare professionals and the public in California not only require quality patient care but also relevant, timely, and accessible poison prevention and education. CPCS’ outreach and education program is focused on resources for “at risk populations” and California’s demographics set CPCS priorities. CPCS Services: CPCS provides California’s poison prevention/information and treatment recommendations for poisoning exposures for the public (regardless of their social, economic, health insurability status, or language preference or modality) and for healthcare professionals, emergency responders, and public health agencies. This is provided daily via the 24-hour emergency hotline service (Poison Help Line) and through the public education and awareness program. Objectives: CPCS will: 1) provide daily, 24-hour emergency and information hotline poison control services; 2) upload case data to the National Poison Data System (NPDS) for reporting and surveillance; 3) sustain accreditation each year and achieve re-accreditation in 2029-30;.4) continue to evaluate the management of cases (exposure and poison information) to ensure optimal care and data collection and adjust policies or procedures as needed; 5) assess the feasibility and cost-to- benefit, of creating a guide and generic protocol for medical professionals to interact with CPCS and to promote CPCS to healthcare provider groups. 6) develop, evaluate, and renew culturally sensitive, language specific, easily readable, age appropriate poison prevention education and outreach to serve vulnerable populations in California, including California's over 1.9 million living in poverty; 7) provide educational and poison prevention materials to the public and assess methods to determine optimal distribution methods; and, 8) continue partnerships with stakeholders to provide training tools, poison prevention education, and outreach to reach larger segments of the population in California.
