The mission of the Utah Poison Control Center is to prevent and minimize adverse health effects from poison exposure through education, service, and research. Celebrating 70 years of service to the entire State of Utah, the UPCC has assisted over 2.1 million people. The purpose of the request for funds from the Poison Control Centers Program Grant is to sustain the level of excellence of the Utah Poison Control Center. The goals for this project support increasing accessibility for the underserved including Spanish-speaking populations and refugee populations, service excellence through public and professional education, various operational requirements to sustain accreditation and maintain high-quality service, and strengthening partnerships with public health and EMS. The specific goals include: Goal 1: Enhance poison prevention education activities throughout the state o Objective 1: Maintain partnership with local health districts to provide outreach education programs and materials outside of the UPCC’s home county o Objective 2: Update poison prevention training and increase accessibility by the underserved Spanish-speaking populations Goal 2: Maintain high quality and excellence in service and information o Objective 1: Regularly monitor and optimize customer satisfaction o Objective 2: Provide online education and resources to healthcare professionals o Objective 3: Conduct at least one quality improvement initiative annually o Objective 4: Train healthcare professional students/residents/fellows on managing poisoned patients Goal 3: Provide data and education to public health and emergency medical services o Objective 1: Provide data of public health significance to public health partners and participate in disaster preparedness o Objective 2: Develop e-learning module for emergency medical services and healthcare professionals Goal 1 supports HRSA program objective #1 to support poisoning preventio n activities as well as comply with operational requirements needed to sustain accreditation. Objectives in goal 1 will be accomplished by maintaining contracts with local health districts to provide community-level poison prevention efforts, distributing education materials state-wide, refreshing Poison 101 e-learning module and creating a new Poison 101 e-learning module in Spanish to better reach underserved Spanish-speaking communities. Goal 2 supports HRSA program objective #2 to provide high-quality guidance and information to callers as well as comply with operational requirements needed to sustain accreditation. Goal 2, objective 1 will be accomplished by conducting ongoing customer satisfaction surveys (in English and Spanish) and regularly reviewing results to identify opportunities for improvement. Goal 2, objective 2 will be accomplished by creating critical toxicology e-resources using tools that best meet the needs of busy clinicians. Goal 2, objective 3 will be accomplished by identifying a new annual quality initiative to complete our existing quality assurance program. Goal 2, objective 4 will be achieved by working with program directors for various disciplines to offer tailored, comprehensive, on-site experiential learning opportunities for future healthcare professionals in their programs. Goal 3 supports HRSA program objectives #3 to provide treatment recommendations when poisonings occur, #4 to collect data related to poisonings and poisoning outcomes and #5 to inform public health and emergency preparedness responses. Goal 3, objective 1 will be accomplished by utilizing medical record software to collect poison case data, conduct ongoing surveillance of poison exposures of public health importance and utilize the National Poisoning Data System (NPDS) to share that data with our public health partners. Goal 3, objective 2 will be accomplished by creating an e-learning module on toxidromes to train emergency medical services personnel and heal thcare professionals.
