The Illinois Poison Center (IPC), the nation’s oldest poison center, is the regional poison center for the state of Illinois. IPC’s staff includes experts in the field of toxicology, highly trained clinical call center staff and experienced public educators who contribute to IPC’s vision of eliminating poisoning harm in all Illinois communities. IPC strives to reduce the incidence and injury due to poisoning through immediate expert telephone treatment recommendations, innovative public outreach and education, health care professional education, and focused research and surveillance. Through the HRSA Poison Control Centers Program, IPC will meet the following federal program objectives: 1. Support poisoning prevention activities; 2. Provide high-quality guidance and information to callers to the Poison Help Line; 3. Provide treatment recommendations when poisonings occur; 4. Collect data related to poisonings and poisoning outcomes; and 5. Use data to inform public health and emergency preparedness responses. IPC will meet these objectives by: 1. Maintaining the number of cases managed by the Poison Help Line. 2. Maintaining the percentage of human exposure poisoning case calls from health care facilities and practitioners. 3. Increasing the percentage of human exposure poisoning cases with a completed follow-up contact. 4. Increasing national data on poisonings available in the National Poison Data System (NPDS) for toxic exposure surveillance purposes. Funding from the HRSA Poison Control Centers Program is essential to IPC’s efforts to meet its public health care responsibility of providing exceptional poison center services to the people of Illinois. Through this federal funding, IPC will continue to maintain and deliver exceptional emergency call center services to improve patient outcomes and decrease unnecessary health care resource utilization, particularly among medically underserved groups; increase the awareness and knowledge of the IPC, the Poison Help Line and poison prevention efforts throughout the state; increase national data on poisonings; and strengthen strategic partnerships with hospitals, public health departments and community organizations that help IPC to reach and serve individuals and communities, especially those who are at risk for health inequity and disparities.
